Everybody knows a proverb “Little children – little problems”. But even a little problem can confound a novice dog-fancier. We will talk about how to accustom a puppy to be tidy in the house. If a puppy is 1,5 -2 months old, he is too young for crying out for the toilet and sufferance. Furthermore, you shouldn’t take the puppy outdoors until all the vaccinations would be done. However, I can’t advise You to sit and not to do a hand’s turn. At this time the best solution would be teaching a puppy to go to the “toilet” at one and the same place. The practice has shown that the best place would be near the front door in the corridor or near the balcony door. And if it is a warm season, it is possible to make a latrine at the balcony. It will help you in future, when the puppy will grow up, and it will be possible to take him outdoors. Twiddle and trample in front of the door will be a signal for You to take the puppy outdoors. And yet we will concentrate on teaching the puppy to do his things in correct place. It is rather easy and the owner must not need special ingenuity to teach his kiddy in this way. The main thing is constant and intent look after the puppy during several days. As soon as the puppy is awakened or fed, and also after intense game, immediately get him to his “toilet” and don’t let him out of this place until the puppy sits down. Just as the puppy has done his business, praise him and let him go. Even if you miss a moment, and the puppy stains not in a prescribed place, take him and get to the place where he is allowed to. But still I recommend you to be always near the puppy these several days and not to miss any of his “sittings”. If you are patient and consistent, then in a few days the puppy will find the way to his “toilet” himself.
As soon as the puppy can be taken outdoors (modern vaccines allow to do this when a puppy is 2,5 months old), the second phase of teaching begins. As a rule, here the problems occur. Being outdoors at first time, a puppy thinks about everything, but not about a “toilet”. He is so shocked by a new huge world, that remembers about physiology only at home. There is nothing surprising in such behavior. What can be advised in such situation? Find a secluded corner not far from a house with few irritants (it can be a nook between garages, blind alley or just a glade surrounded by bushes). And take the puppy only there in first days. You shouldn’t choose a pavement as a “toilet”, because the puppy can get used to do his business only on the asphalt. And neither You, nor passersby will feel joy because of such behavior, when the puppy will become an adult dog. In a rather short period of time the puppy will explore this small plot of land and will feel as at home at ease. That is precisely what we need. In usual conditions, when nothing diverts a puppy, he will easily learn to sit down to relieve himself. Only after the puppy will “put a mark” in his secluded spot, you can continue your walk outdoors, developing and socializing the puppy. And when returning home, don’t forget to visit the secluded spot again.
Some puppies are strong conservators when speaking about their habits, that’s why even in a familiar narrow courtyard they refuse to do their business and “carry everything home”. In this case, probably, one ruse can help. Take the floor cloth, which you use for cleaning puppy’s urine and spread it outdoors at that secluded spot we spoke about. As for “toilet” the puppy is guided mostly by odor, that’s why most likely the puppy will “sit down” near the “native” cloth. After some time you won’t need that cloth. The puppy’s guideline will be an odor left on the soil. But sometimes happens, that all the tricks are futile. And the puppy, enduring all the walk, still does his business at home. If your puppy behaves in such a way, I advise you to arm yourself with saintly patience. So, here are your actions. Even if your puppy did nothing during the walk (as expected), you just go home with a calm confidence. But don’t hurry to put off your shoes, watch attentively the puppy. He has endured for so long at the walk, that most likely immediately would sit down to relieve himself. Exactly at this moment you must pick him up and run outdoors. There you have two variants. Either the puppy nicely does his business, and both of you happily go home, or the puppy does nothing and you just go home, and everything repeats again. And again, if needed – until the puppy would relieve himself outdoors. If you show an enviable patience and considerable persistence, then you can rather quickly make the puppy drop the habit of staining in the house. The main thing is not to lose heart and not to assure yourself, that today you don’t have time for running here and there, but you can do it tomorrow (next day, weekend).
And remember, that even if you have taught your puppy to ask for a toilet, he wouldn’t learn to endure at once. That’s why the puppy should be taken outdoors every 2-3 hours. If the puppy hadn’t be taken outdoors for a long time, and he made a puddle at home, the puppy must not be punished in any case. But if just after the walk the puppy tries to leave a “mark” at home, your fair anger is absolutely appropriate. But remember, that it is better to punish a puppy before he has done a fault, or at least in the process. Never punish a dog after a “crime”. And all the more so you shouldn’t push a puppy’s snout into the puddle. “It’s all good”, – you can say – but what should be done, if the puppy must be left in the house alone for a few hours?”
In this case before leaving a house you should restrict the freedom of the puppy with limits of his sleeping berth. The point is that puppies are very cleanly by nature and never empty their bowels and urinary bladders in the place where they sleep. By disabling the opportunity to leave a bedding, thereby we impel the puppy to endure. The easiest way to restrict the space is using a cage. It’s not worth to think that a cage is something awful, a prison. On contrary, the cage is a  small house for a dog, the place where he feels protected, and where he can find a place to stay in private if he wants to. If you haven’t got a cage, you can build with wooden boards an open-air cage with ledges of certain height, so that the puppy couldn’t get out of it. So, if you need to go somewhere for a few hours, send the puppy to the bedding and close a cage or an open-air cage. And as soon as you return, first thing you should do is to take the puppy outdoors. You shouldn’t let him out of the “small house”, because the puppy had endured for a long time. Being out of the cage, he will make a puddle at once. It would be better for you to take the puppy from the “small house” directly with your hands and immediately get him outdoors. There is one more problem which owners of dogs face sometimes. This problem does not apply to cleanness, but also concerns the “toilet” theme. A puppy which is 3-4 months old is clever enough to come to conclusion, that the longer is time of his endurance during the walk, the longer the walk continues. This habit “to carry all within” till the end of the walk especially irritates, when the owner of the dog is in a great hurry or the weather is bad.
It’s better not to allow a puppy to behave in such a way. For this, take the puppy out to do his business always on the leash, and just as he does the deed, let him run for a while. The opportunity to run a little without a leash would be a great stimulus for the puppy. And later, being outdoors, the puppy will try to do his business rapidly to get freedom and to gambol a little.
Also there are such dogs which, being already adult ones, do not do their business outdoors, if the weather is rainy or just slushy. It is the result of the fact that the puppy wasn’t taught to do his business in such weather since infancy. The puppy is young, and the owner, looking at rain behind the window, decides that it is better for puppy to stay at home. And takes the puppy outdoors only when the weather is good. Unintentionally, in this way the owner creates a stereotype for the dog, which is difficult to get rid of, when the dog becomes an adult.
Probably, these are all subtleties which can help You accustom the puppy to cleanness in the house. And happiness of communication with dog won’t be spoiled with puddles and knots on the floor.
